Andy B's Fast Road/Track build

No way mate! can you find out from your mate how he did the fogs please is he on mk3oc?

Sorted the engine's high idle on start up and the spluttering miss-fire between gear changes, it was a poor connection at the coolant temperature sensor. Somebody had repaired it before by the looks of it. So i tidied it up for now until i get a new plug. I had a new coolant sensor fitted too, After i repaired it, the engine management light has come on with code 15 (Coolant sensor high voltage). I cleared the code and the light went off, but this put me back to square 1, it wouldn't start easily and if it did, ran like ****! Fiddled around with it, management light back on with code 15! Funny thing is, It runs better now than its ever done, with management light on! Very odd, I'll see if its any better after replacing the actual plug.

ABS & TC lights on now too, something very odd going on with the electronics i think. Whenever the management light comes on for any particular reason, the ABS & TC come on simultaneously, same when i clear the ECU, it'll clear all lights. Anyone experienced the same thing before?

Here's how i found the wiring under a load of tape!.....

Thats what my loom looks like all over now, repairing it as it fails. Best to check other plugs as well mate

Does your car have factory traction control ?

Reason I ask is there are two coolant sensors available, blue non traction control and black for traction...

I believe it has. The TC button Is there and connected, however it doesn’t function. The old plug was black, the new one is blue. After changing it to the blue, it still ran poor. I later found that there was nothing wrong with either plugs, it was actually a bad connection in the loom. The car runs much better now with the blue plug fitted and loom repaired, no more spluttering between gear changes etc. Only problem now is the engine management light is on with code 15 (Coolant sensor high voltage). If i clear the code, the car won’t start. I need to try it with the old black sensor actually, just incase the blue plug is incorrect.

What’s the relation between plug colour and the TC system then mate?? I can’t say I’ve heard of this before to be honest.

Yeah there is definitely two different sensors, I remember struggling to find black ones but blue were really easy to get hold of, not sure on what is different though but CTS for some reason can make them run like a bag of spanners

I find that very strange. What I’ll do this week, today even, is take a 19mm spanner out with me and try the 2 different sensors.
Did some of the GSi’s come without TC then? I thought they were standard equipped in all of them. I’ve never seen one without, thinking about it.

I was told the black ones were Bosch and the blue ones were just copies. I’m Think I heard there were more coloured copies sensors too.... I dunno!

Dont know the reason behind the two different colours as technically its a temp sensor so they are both doing the same job, maybe one has a different resistance change as it heats up..?

Worth trying the black sensor though mate, see if it sorts the problem out :thumb:

I'm not 100% in this particular scenario , but in the motoring world there is 2 types of temperature sensors (which are thermistors)
there is negative co-efficiant and positive co-efficiant.

so as temperature rises, on one resistance increases and on the other resistance decrease. i wonder if this is the difference between the two?!
Or it could just be the resistance they work on and feedback. Either would seriously mess up the running of a car!

Switched back to the black coolant temperature sensor today and I’m back to the original issue of miss firing and spluttering between gear changes. Oddly, the engine management, ABS & TC lights have cleared off the dash. I’m a bit puzzled here now as the engine ran soooo well With the blue sensor fitted, but had the engine management, ABS & TC lights.
Next step I’ll switch back to the blue sensor and flash the ABS & TC codes. I know i have a code 15 (Coolant sensor high voltage) When the blue sensor is fitted.

Any thoughts anyone?

Bought and fitted a new black coolant temperature sensor Yesterday. All warning lights have cleared and the engine is running very good. The improvement is quite significant to be honest, cold start & idle is good, no spluttering between gear changes and the fuel consumption has notably improved.
It seems that my original black sensor being faulty was the root cause of the problem. After fitting a blue sensor and having some funny behaviour with running and warning lights, I think it’s now apparent that the black sensor is the one my engine requires.

Hello everyone, it's been a while! Very sorry to of disappeared off the radar like i did. Stuff happened and life got in the way. The Astra during that time took a beating too, I accidentally tore off the front bumper and snapped it in half . Came face to face with an oncoming car on a narrow lane with speed humps, the other car was too stubborn to give way so i had to reverse back over the speed hump, and in doing so, I tore the front bumper clean off the car apart from a little section that stayed attached to the car. I was gutted!! Had to throw the bumper in the car and drive home. Thing's got worse!!!... I was only 5 miles from home when this happened, and as i was driving back the gearbox went bang and was shuddering like mad! Was stuck in 3rd gear all the way home. No other gear could be selected. I fiddled around with it when i got it back home on the driveway and just made things worse to be honest, i got a little bit too rough with it and forced it too hard into gear because i was so frustrated with it. The diff "I think" went bang on the driveway, the bang and noise it made was clear enough that it was catastrophic . It blew a big hole in the box and there were metal shavings, bearings, pieces of the clutch pressure plate and even half sheared cogs all over my driveway . When i removed the box, it was in a right state, I cannot really explain what actually failed because every component was absolutely destroyed. The clutch pressure plate was in 3 pieces, friction plate material was like confetti and a few cogs in the box were completely destroyed and in fragments. I wish i had photos to show you, I've had a couple of new phones since and not sure where those photos are, but i will look .

After all this happened, I had neglected and lost my enthusiasm with it to be honest. Life had got in the way primarily and I had more or less moved into her house, i was struggling a bit financially too. I've started a new job at the beginning on this year and I'm really enjoying it, a fresh new me is back! I've got my enthusiasm back and i'm very motivated to get the Astra back on the road! . I work away from home during the weekdays now and come home every weekend unless there's overtime at work. So, my weekends will be focused on the Astra now.

So... I bought a new gearbox off a chap on e-Bay few weeks back for £200 + £45 postage, I'm expecting this to arrive this week, and a new clutch kit too. I'd been looking for a front bumper all this while, but just couldn't find one. I'd always fancied an aftermarket bumper that had an extension where the original splitter section is, because the bumper looks fuller and closer to the ground. I personally really like it so I've gone ahead in placing an order for this bumper. It should be ready by the end of the month for me. It's being fabricated with fibreglass, and they will send it out with a fresh coat of primer too. It cost me £265 + £25 postage.

Great to hear you have your life back on track. Bit of a bummer about the gearbox imploding within itself. that front bumper is a copy of the Rieger front with the 'S' Type splitter. I had one many years ago.

Great build tho keep it up

Thanks Gareth. The bumper should be arriving in the next week or two hopefully. The gearbox however is not looking good at all. I purchased a gearbox from a chap on eBay in early February for £200 & £45 postage, that got lost in transit apparently then he had a second gearbox for sale and that one has mysteriously gone missing in transit now too!! So I’m in the process of trying to claim my money back through eBay. It’s annoying that I’ve had this setback now as I anticipated to have it pretty much ready to put back on the road by now. I’ve got to find another F20 gearbox now. There’s nothing been on eBay for a while now, typically there was a few going as soon as I bought the recent one.

If there’s anyone aware of an F20 for sale, I’d be most grateful.

That's awful buddy 2 f20s and both lost. I'll ask around for a F20 but I'd be looking at other options of gearbox :)

Yea possible think about a saab unit or something, f28's are mega gearboxs but fetch a hefty price tag now days, although they are fit and forget. Sounds like an odd situation to loose 2 gearboxs, hope you get your money back
